Our March presentation will give you a summary on the current state of investment markets. We’ll look at what’s changed, what it means for you and what strategies might be called for in response to those changes.

Important topical issues we’ll look at will include:
    • An economic update
    • Valuation discussions – which various asset classes are cheap, expensive or fair value?
    • Current investment themes
    • Risks and opportunities
    • Asset allocation discussion - how we’re varying the allocation to different investments based on valuation, risk, opportunities and portfolio diversification.

If you’re an investor, it’s critical you understand how to value different assets – what basis you use to work out what an asset is worth, and understanding how other investors value their assets.

In this presentation we’ll look at the different ways asset types are valued across different classes.

We’ll also spend time looking at how we can test ‘the market’s’ assumptions, and work out whether those assumptions are overly optimistic or pessimistic.

We’re all looking for quality investments – ones that may go up and down in waves, but rarely get damaged or ‘sink’ in difficult economic times! As long as you don’t significantly overpay for a quality investment, its addition means your risk of loss over time is drastically reduced, and your portfolio much more resilient.

On the other hand, if your portfolio is built up with lower quality assets, your current wealth position may appear solid – but market changes may find you skating on very thin ice!

Those tough economic times are inevitable at some stage, so we’ll take a look in this presentation at investments that ensure you’re never placed in a ‘forced sale’ position. And yes, that means expanding your focus beyond just blue chip and property investments in high value suburbs.

How does the mind of an investor work? Our June presentation will give you valuable insights into investor psychology and how investors behave in different situations.

We all know how emotions impact our decisions, and investors are no different. Every investor is affected by emotion, even professionals! The challenge this presents is that it creates a strong tendency to ‘follow the crowd’ and buy high and sell low - and often to invest at the worst possible times.

Understanding the role emotions play will help you avoid the traps, and take advantage of the opportunities.

Maximise returns, minimise risks. In essence, this is what we look to achieve for you as we structure your portfolio. The real skill of portfolio management is not making impossible predictions, but rather putting you in a position where you can expect reasonable certainty in your returns, while avoiding being vulnerable to market downturns.

In this session we’ll look at how a portfolio can balance these two elements. The truism often used to convey this approach is ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’, but doing that effectively means more than merely investing in a few different options. It means creating a well-designed portfolio that considers how different investments will behave over varying economic conditions.

The normal rules do not apply! A bubble represents an extreme state of the investor psyche, where the normal valuation methods and considerations can be bypassed. They’re the great destroyer of wealth and can cause huge economic pain if funded by high levels of debt.

In this presentation we’ll look at how Intralink engages in dynamic risk management as risks and circumstances change, seeking to minimise the risks of large portfolio losses that occur when markets in general or in specific areas experience big falls.

We’ll unpack the factors that lead to significant financial crises like the GFC and the Great Depression, and explore what actions we can take to protect your portfolio when these factors occur.

All presentations will be held at the Intralink office at Level 10, 360 Collins Street Melbourne.
